Does anyone know what this is?

Hi all - this was purchased recently at an antiques store in Europe.  It reads "1930 Mickey Mouse Book First Edition" The cover plate is brass with a door that opens to reveal a piece of glass with a picture of Mickey Mouse.  If the card is removed from the top Mickey is shown in color on a blue background.  The back is of wood and has a marker 002.  The fabric covered box has a small Mickey embroidered on the cover and a registration number and plaque.  Any info is greatly appreciated!

What an interesting item!  I honestly can't say that I have any idea what that would be. 

Is the box/compartment large enough that it might be used as a child's jewelry box or storage for small toys or other knick-knacks?
