Collecting Disney Pins

One of the hottest segments of Disney collectibles is pin collecting.  These copper-based pins are about the size of a keying, and are worn on hats, lanyards, and vests.  Beyond the allure of finding a rare and valuable Disney pins, this hobby has grown to become an interactive experience on a number of levels. 

Disney pin trading has become an international phenomenon where fellow pin collectors barter and trade pins amongst themselves.  The hub of this activity can be found at the Disney theme parks; where special trading posts have been constructed to promote trading.  There are also designated cast members who wear special vests to indicate they are pin traders.  Beyond the theme parks, Disney pin trading has utilized the internet to bring traders together.  There are a host of websites dedicated specifically to Disney pins, and most of these sites offer clubs and links for trading.

Disney has also incorporated the popularity of pins into the design of their theme parks.  The Magical Moments Pins actually interface with special areas in the theme parks.  For example, the proximity of a particular mascot or attraction will activate a corresponding pin to light up or play a tune.  It is this ingenuity that insures Disney pin collecting will thrive and grow in the future.

Vintage Disney pins have long been the focus of memorabilia collectors, but the overall increase in pin popularity has added to their mystique.  It is not uncommon to find large lots of pins commanding prices in the hundreds of dollars and some particularly rare pins can bring enter the $1000 range.  This kind of return makes Disney pin collecting a profitable niche for collectors who are knowledgeable in the market.

While Disney pins only make up a small percentage of all of the available Disney memorabilia on the aftermarket, their popularity amongst collectors has made this a segment with high growth potential.  For new collectors, the market offers a great deal of accessibility as current issue pins can be had for as low as $5.  This low cost of entry guarantees that the Disney pin collecting will spawn plenty of new collectors for years to come.
